What exactly is an Aura?
The simplest definition is: An aura is the subtle quality or presence that seems to surround and emanate from a person, place or thing.
In everyday language, we often experience someone's aura without seeing anything supernatural.
You walk into a room and immediately feel calm.
You meet someone and instantly feel comfortable.
You spend ten minutes with another person and somehow feel completely drained.
You enter a beautiful temple, forest, spa or meditation room and notice that your entire state begins to change.
What are you experiencing? We might call it:
atmosphere
presence
energy
mood
vibration
feeling
emotional tone
environment
intuition
“good vibes”
“bad vibes”
someone's aura
The English word aura therefore carries several meanings.
In spiritual and esoteric traditions, it is commonly described as a subtle emanation surrounding a living being. In everyday modern language, it can simply mean the distinctive quality or atmosphere surrounding someone or something.
The word aura is used in several different ways.
In everyday language, someone might say:
“She has such a warm aura.”
They may not mean that they literally see a colored field around her body. They may simply be describing the feeling of her presence.
In spiritual and metaphysical traditions, however, an aura is commonly described as an unseen energetic field surrounding a person or living being.
But here's where an important distinction needs to be made.
“Aura” is not originally a simple Sanskrit word for an energy bubble.
Different spiritual systems interpret this field differently. Some associate it with emotional, mental, spiritual, or energetic states, while aura practices often connect colors and qualities of the aura with particular experiences or states of being.
There is an important distinction here:
An aura, as described in spiritual traditions, is not currently established by mainstream science as a measurable colored energy field surrounding the human body.
That doesn't mean the experience of someone's “energy” is meaningless.
It means we should distinguish between a spiritual framework and a scientific measurement.
You don't need a laboratory to understand that your internal state affects the way you move through the world.
Stress changes how you breathe.
Rest changes how you respond.
Your mood changes your presence.
Your environment affects your nervous system.
Your relationships affect your emotional state.
Your thoughts influence your attention.
Your habits shape your everyday experience.
And all of these things influence what you carry into a room—and what other people experience when they are around you.
That is one beautiful way to begin understanding the idea of an aura.
Your aura can be thought of as the energetic expression of your experience.

There isn't one ancient Sanskrit term that perfectly translates to the modern wellness industry's entire concept of “the aura.”
Instead, Indian philosophical traditions give us a much richer vocabulary for understanding the different dimensions that modern people often group together under the word aura.
Those concepts include:
Prāṇa — vital life force or vital energy
Tejas — radiance, brilliance, vitality and inner fire
Ojas — vital strength, essence and resilience
Śakti — power, energy or transformative force
Sūkṣma śarīra — the subtle body
Kośas — layers or “sheaths” of embodied existence
Nāḍīs — subtle channels described in yogic traditions
Cakras — subtle centers described in later yoga and tantric traditions
Understanding these concepts gives us a much more meaningful way to think about what people today call an aura.
